The War on Cancer

It seems that Pres. Obama and other senate supporters are standing up to aid in our fight against breast cancer by introducing the 21st Century Cancer ALERT Act. (ALERT stands for access to life-saving early detection, research and treatment)

To quote the CNN article:
"This bill is an effort to address our shortcomings and renew our commitment to discovering and delivering the cures to cancer. This legislation seeks to address this by placing an emphasis on early detection and promoting the discovery and development of biomarkers so cancers can be detected at the earliest possible stage, when cancer is most treatable. It will also strengthen the cancer research process by promoting public-private partnerships and collaboration between government agencies. And the bill stresses translational research, so new discoveries and breakthroughs in the laboratory make their way to patients' bedsides as quickly as possible. The Cancer ALERT Act will begin to improve access to cancer care for underserved populations by expanding access to clinical trials and patient navigation services."

This commentary by Nancy Brinker is fabulous! In case you don't know, Ms. Brinker is the founder of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, which we work so hard to support.

Team Karaoke for the Cure: Often imitated, never duplicated...

Team Karaoke for the Cure is gearing up for the 2009 season and we need your support! We will be hosting a Garage Sale for the Cure in late May and are also looking at securing dates for our annual Cookout for the Cure and Karaoke for the Cure events (both to be held in September). Please stay tuned to our MySpace, Blogspot and our e-mail updates for more information.

If you'd like to sign up for e-mail updates, please send a message to karaoke4thecure@gmail.com.

It has been brought to our attention that another team in the Bradenton area will be hosting a "Karaoke for the Cure" event at Pelican Pete's in Cortez on May 8th. Please do not confuse this with our team and our annual event. This is a separate team raising money for Relay for Life.

According to The Independent (a UK news source), "While the death rate (for breast cancer) has fallen, the incidence of the disease has soared, doubling since 1971 to over 45,000 cases a year. More than three out of four women diagnosed with breast cancer survive more than five years today, compared with half in the early 1970s." Good news, but still shocking that so many people are affected by this disease. Read the full article here.

Pink Power Gardening

My mom (and personal hero), Cindi, clued me in on a "Pink-Power Perennial Garden" that you can order from The White Flower Farm. Part of the proceeds fund breast cancer research and of course your garden will have lots of pink blooms to enjoy!

"Your purchase of our exclusive "Pink-Power" Perennial Garden will help support breast cancer research. If you are sending this garden as a gift to honor a special person, the accompanying gift card can let her know how much you admire her courageous spirit. Send the gift of love and contribute to breast health awareness with a planting of pink flowers. The Pink-Power Garden contains six different perennials that combine together beautifully in soft pink, rose pink, pale pink with magenta, and even pink-and-white stripes." Cost: $79.95 (remember, it goes to a good cause!)

Check it out

Thanks Mom!!

Starting up...

Ok, so I'm diving into the popular world of blogging. Bare with me, this may be a little clunky at first. Team Karaoke for the Cure is ready to start raising funds and awareness for the 2009 "pink" season (well, Kasey and Shirley are ready to start anyway).

Stay tuned to the blog as I will post some inspirational stories and updates about our team and our events here as often as I can get to it.

So far this year we are planning some new events such as a Pink Poker Tournament and a possible Kickball Charity Tournament in the late summer or early fall. We will also hold our annual events such as Cookout for the Cure and Karaoke for the Cure (I can't believe we're in our 5th year!).

In the mean time, please check out one of my favorite blogs, "The Adventures of Toby and Kim". This is a blog one of my best friends, Kim Rickel, whose mother was just diagnosed as a Pink Lady. She updates it often to let us know how they're all doing. Please keep them in your thoughts.

Until next time! GO PINK!
